Childhood memories, free and innocent
Of Sotu’s sawmills as playgrounds
Festivals. Agemo, masquerades, and rams head-butting
Dazed men whipping each other sore
Football fields on St. Paul grounds
Rich, poor, smart or not just had fun
Why not?
Odun Keresimesi, Ileya or Easter
Sango or Ogun worshippers or Egungun celebrations
The dread of oro
A Christian child, woke up at dawn
For the early breakfast, then lunch
Then broke the non-fast at dusk
Bliss. Memories so free and joyful.
Why not?
Iya Simawa, Iya Olobi, Alhaja Kaabo
Alhaji Sola(rin) Bolanle and siblings Awon ti Ojutun, Makun
Iya Alaso, Alhaji Tiriba, Sabo, Aiyegbami, Ofin
All a vast playground
Why not?
Now bloody birds fly, axes cutting
Sorrow, tears, death
Why?
Instead of festivals, games or playgrounds
Orgies of blood and death
Has the devil taken over the land or did it belong to him?
Has hell descended?
Why?
Why?
What changed?
Were we always like this?
Did our deceptions catch up with us?
Are we now wicked, or were we wicked still?
Did we always consume our young? Our future?
Did we always seek to destroy those who helped?
To murder bright destinies?
Did excitable wickedness of youth replace restrained and methodical wickedness of the older?
Did evil take physical expression?
Why?
Glory forgone, virtue siphoned
Destinies destroyed, joy abandoned
Darkness rules, old and young
Retardation, failure, poverty, fire
Legacies sacrificed, progress averted
Where peace once stood, now terror and dread
Darkness, filth, dilapidation, evil whoredoms
Paradise lost.
Why?

What ever is changing our society; May the Lord God redeem the land. May good days return from this our time.
